Had he dropped a plate, I would have been badly burned. This was disconcerting and quite frankly, unacceptable. We placed our orders and hoped that the food would compensate for his lack in professionalism. The food did arrive shortly after, but I was appalled that our server handed sizzling hot dishes over my head to my friends instead of doing what normal servers do and serve you individually while standing beside you. Trying to jolly him up was a total exercise in futility. He was lumpish and aloof, no matter how politely we addressed him and his answers were curt and almost rude. And I am mentioning this person loud and clear. You have to be pretty terrible to be mentioned. I rarely have to single a server out for bad service. These folks bring you your food, see to your needs and do it all with usually cheerful professionalism. Mind you, I take great pride in my generous treatment of all restaurant servers and staff. He was sullen and obviously did NOT want to be waiting tables. Our "server" arrived.( Mind you, the other servers we observed were professionally dressed, neat as a pin with all black trousers and button down shirts and a tie.) Our college age server was dressed in some type of black hoodie with a large graphic on the back, blue jeans, and the personality of a soap dish. All in all, it seemed to be shaping up to be a lovely experience. The menus were easy to read and everything sounded absolutely delicious. What a welcome respite from other restaurants who play their music so loud it's almost painful to endure. The music was a lovely smooth jazz at a normal audio setting which allowed for conversation without having to shout over it. The table had very nice linen and place settings. The atmosphere is rather elegant for a Chinese restaurant, updated, clean and a color palette that is calm and attractive. We arrived around 5 pm on a Friday evening, and were impressed with the enthusiastic greeting we received from the staff and host who brought us to a large round. My sister and our friends selected Zen Gardens to meet for dinner and catch up. Amplify Your AwarenessĪll of our guests are invited to visit the garden and stay as long as you like, savoring the heightened sense of sensory awareness and inner peace that often follows Osmosis treatments. The garden was lovingly constructed by the late Steve Stucky, former Abbot of the San Francisco Zen Center, who helped build all of the gardens at Osmosis from its inception. The Meditation Garden was designed and built under the direction of Robert Ketchell, a renowned British horticulturalist who has studied landscape design extensively in Kyoto, Japan (where our founder Michael Stusser first met him in the 1970s). As you walk about this ten-stage narrative, you’ll encounter various rock and plant features, each carefully designed - down to the sound of water gently descending on stones - to offer a new perspective and opportunity for reflection. The garden is designed as a living sculpture, inspired by the Zen parable of the “ Ox and the Ox Herder,” a metaphor for the experience of enlightenment. Guests are invited to walk, lay, sit, or meditate in the garden, experiencing its ethereal feel that is unmistakably calming. Through a labyrinth of plants, stones, and water, the garden tells an ancient tale of liberation from the everyday concerns of the world. Our authentic Kyoto-style Meditation Garden is ranked among the top Japanese gardens in North America, and offers a quiet place for contemplation during your journey.
